1. The main idea of this photography series is to go back to the beginnings of photography as well as bringing the not-now and the now together.
2. The purpose of these photograms is is to "stop time" or bring back the past of when the images were being made.
3. These ideas are expressed through the various shapes and shades of colors used as well as the compositions she makes. It is also expressed through the photographic technique of photograms rather than traditional photographs as it makes the image more personal and close-feeling.Morgan Murrayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03035769239816484014noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8860526751813629281.post-74602125466748672992011-10-20T13:53:00.000-04:002011-10-20T13:53:28.164-04:00Week 8 Writing Assignment

Fashion Forward X by Christopher Malcolm

The light is coming from the right, probably just slightly above chest level. Also the light is diffused or has a soft box on it as the light is brightest around the chest and it does not fall off quick but rather lights her face as well as her dress and feet. The soft light fits well with the photo because of the model and her dress. Her dress is soft and flowy, as well as her hair, which seem to pull together the softness of the photo with the light. Having the photo in black and white makes it more interesting because it softens the overall image as well adds a classic touch. The dress and soft lighting also help bring in the look of a classic dance photo.
Morgan Murrayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03035769239816484014noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8860526751813629281.post-80879143537699931822011-10-18T16:43:00.000-04:002011-10-18T16:43:19.772-04:00Week 8 Assignment: Lighting Contact Sheets
Direct Lighting:

She does a little bit of everything in the art world, but mostly drawing and painting. She is still going through school but she does a lot of side work including commissions.

Q: What are the inspirations behind your work and what motivates you to keep going?

A: There's a few different things that inspire me. When I browse around the internet or see other people's artwork in person, that's what inspires me. I'll see something I like and I'll want to try it myself, except maybe giving it my own twist so I'm not copying that other artist. Sometimes I'll just try it to see if I can do it. I want to keep getting better at what I do, which I would say is my motivation, so I try something a little different each time. But sometimes when I'm not inspired by another's piece, I get my ideas just by listening to music and staring at a blank canvas and start from there. I'll see images in my head, and although sometimes I can't really put it to the paper how I see it in my head, I still like the results... sometimes.

Q: What do you try to communicate through your work?

A: I'm not gonna lie, but sometimes my artwork doesn't really have a meaning behind it! Sometimes I just wanna make something just for the hell of it. Like the one below. I just think it looks sweet. Most of the time it's when I do artwork for other people.

For other pieces, they do have a meaning behind them. For example, The 2 piece I love you for now (forever). That has to do with relationships in general. I was thinking of my past exes. The whole breaking up situation was just ugly in general. So in response I wanted to make something that wasn't all cutesy and pleasing to look at. I remember me and my ex always saying to each other " I love you forever", which we did really mean it at time, or so we thought we did. But now that I'm no longer with that person, it occurs to me that it's more like I'm with you right for the moment, so" I love you for now." It made me realize that certain love does not last forever. Its like the love you feel for each other can be dropped at any moment.

I didn't get as many photos I had wanted nor was I able to do a couple photo shoots I had wanted, due to work/ sickly friends.

Wednesday: I've been trying to do star shots all summer and haven't had much luck. Here's something I did real quick in between clouds passing. I believe the exposure was only about a minute long. But if I went any brighter the sky began to turn red do to light pollution from the mall. I have yet to find a really dark spot in Oneonta or at home.

I really enjoy experimenting with new types of photos and methods of photography, as well as colors. So this week I chose glow sticks and tried camera tossing.

Camera tossing is literally just throwing your camera in the air to try and get interesting light trails. I got the idea from photojojo and this site gives a mini tutorial.

I'm not a huge fan of how mine turned out. I think the softness is due to me using glow sticks rather than actual lights. Hopefully I will be trying this again soon and getting better results!

For this one I taped the glow sticks to my ceiling and just moved my camera in squiggly lines and had a shorter shutter speed.

It talks about how taking better photos of animals at rescue shelters actually increases the amount of animals adopted. The photographer who had started this does it free of charge and helps train others to take good photos at other shelters. After reading it and watching the clip of the photographer it makes me want to go to our shelter and do the same thing :)
How do you benefit internally and what do you hope for from your photography externally?

A: Making photographs, for me, is a way to express creativity. I have never been any good at drawing, painting, sculpting, or any other art forms, but I'm decent at photography, and I love it. I love the feeling that comes when I'm behind the camera and the satisfaction after I click the shutter button. It just feels right.

Right now I think that my motivation to take photos comes from me knowing that I have to learn the basics before I can specialize and understand how to take other kinds of photos. After graduating I eventually hope to do scientific photography. This would include underwater photography, astrophotography, and under the microscope photography, as well as possible wildlife. My motivation behind wanting to do these kinds of photographs is to help others discover what else is out there. Not everyone has the opportunities to discover the wonders that are beneath the ocean or that are in the night sky, but I want everyone to be able to see them if they choose to. Plus, for me, these kinds of photography are what take my breath away. If portraits are your thing, that's cool and I understand many people like to do them, but to me they're bland. I want to do something that is both interesting to others as well as myself.

Q: What interests and inspires you as an artist?

A: Well as mentioned above I am interested in the science side of photography. One of the main influences in this is the photographer David Doubilet. He is an underwater photographer and many of his images are stunning. Another artist who has inspired me is Barbara Kruger. She isn't exactly a photographer, but she works with images and texts to create inspiring and thought-invoking pieces.

I guess for me inspiration is hard to come by and depends on the project. For a school project last year we did cultures and had to come up with photos to go along with one. The one I chose was Egyptian gods and goddesses and the hieroglyphics are what inspired me to come up with ideas and my model inspired me with different on the spot poses. Other sources of inspiration are simply photos I see in books or on websites such as Flickr. Any photograph that catches my eye is usually something I wish I had created or want to know how they made.
Morgan Murrayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03035769239816484014noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8860526751813629281.post-12976270856964702672011-09-21T20:53:00.000-04:002011-09-21T20:53:08.496-04:00Week 4 Assignment: Groups of ObjectsThis week we had to choose 4 similar objects a shoot them 4 different ways.

Creating a good photograph involves many different criteria. Some include:

1. Photo draws your eye, catches your interest.

2. Angle or point of view.

3. Makes the viewer think or react emotionally.

4. Has a message, or pushes barriers.

5. The subject matter is interesting.

6. Tells a story.

7. Catches the ‘critical moment’ when action is at it’s pea

8. Clear focus of photo (both the sharpness and primary subject matter).

9. Design elements: composition, framing, lines, movement.

10. Lighting interesting

11. Technically proficient (exposure, focus, etc)

12. Good printing: frame, paper, size, all match content.

The above photo meets most, or all, of the numbers on the list.

The photo draws your eye due to the high contrast and organic shapes.

The point of view is fairly simple, as if you were standing directly in front of the scene.

The photo may not make one react emotionally but it does make you wonder what is going on in the photo and what the artist was trying to portray.

She pushes barriers by doing something that most photographers do not do, which is painting with light. She then adds a human element in the corner which is another thing most photographers do not do.

The subject matter is extremely interesting as you are not quite sure what is going on. You see the light and the hand but you aren't sure why either is there or what it is meant to be doing.

It may not tell a story, but I'm sure that one could easily be made up to go along with the photo.

It does not catch one moment where the action is at its peak, but instead the total moments when the light was moving.

The focus is definitely clear as they are the only lighted objects in the frame.

She uses asymmetrical balance and rule of thirds to make her composition the strongest.

The lighting is the main focus of the photo, and with the motion involved it adds to the interest of the photograph.

She seems to have exposed everything for just the right amount of time. The hand is perfectly exposed with bright highlights and deep shadows as well as it being well in focus.

I'm not sure whether this photo was originally printed on matte or glossy paper, but the glossy paper of the book seems to match it just fine. I believe it could be printed at any size and still have the dazzling effect.

This week's assignment was to photograph any moveable three-dimensional object, so I chose a stuffed animal. I felt he needed a forest-like background and took him into the woods to shoot. It wasn't as easy as I was hoping it would be. The lighting in the woods was scattered, leading to some bright spots, which I avoided, and some dark spots. It also was a greenish color light. I ended up putting my white balance on sunny (shade was too red, cloudy was too yellow, and auto was too blue) and ended up with a slightly green tint to my photos.

It was interesting trying to come up with ways to photograph the giraffe. If so, why? Describe if there was a moment when the mood, your relationship or your comfort being photographed shifted?

A: Personally, I never feel comfortable being photographed. But when I began taking photographs, I felt much more comfortable. After awhile we started talking more and it became more comfortable between us.

Q2: How can you help someone feel more comfortable when you are photographing?

A: It helps both the photographer and model feel more comfortable when they begin talking about things and see what they have in common. It also helps the model to feel comfortable by shooting somewhere familiar and showing that the photographer is in control and knows what he/she is doing.Morgan Murrayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03035769239816484014noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8860526751813629281.post-43661376454402473502011-09-07T15:04:00.000-04:002011-09-07T15:04:58.868-04:00Week 2 Assignment: Portraits

Barbara Morgan. Barbara Morgan: Photomontage. Published in 1980.

City Shell is on page 15 and Incoming is on page 43.

City Shell draws my attention because of the shapes she is using in it. She uses diagonal parallel lines across the bottom and the twisting shape of the shell draws you eyes upwards from there. Also she uses a lot of contrast to draw your attention around the image- she has the pure black on the top majority of the photo with the bright white and light grays that pop the shell. Lastly, my favorite part is the little people walking in the shell. They don’t grab your attention right away and you have to look closely to notice what they are.

Incoming interests me because of the darkness of the photo. It is only a photo of a slightly open window, which is the only light source of the photograph. And this image does not take up the whole paper, but rather about a quarter of it. But the interesting part is the scratches she scattered along the bottom and left side. These scratches add to the darkness of the photo and make you wonder what happened with this window. There is very little variety in grays in the photo, it mostly contains sharp blacks and whites with only hints of gray tones in the field outside the window.

I first picked up the book because I liked her name. Then I really liked the image on the front because I am interested in experimenting with lights. When I opened the book I found that she experimented a lot with double exposures, light, photograms, and other different photography techniques and was interested.

I think one of Morgan’s strengths is her ability to plan her double exposures. Most of the photos said they had be pre-planned, which is interesting to see how well the came together. Another strength is her readiness to experiment with different darkroom techniques. These add to her interesting qualities as many photographers did not, and still do not, use these techniques in the darkroom. Another of her strengths is her ability to use organic and geometric shapes in her photos to make them more interesting and draw your eye around the photograph.

Multiple things combine to create a good photo. A photo needs to make someone feel something by using light, subject matter, or other elements. A good photograph has unity and if you remove just one thing from the scene, it ruins the feel of the photograph. It needs to capture someone’s attention, whether it includes words, people, still-life, or any other object. A good photo can follow the rules of art including rule of thirds, composition, color, space, texture, rhythm, etc, but it does not always have to.
